DNA Testing Available for Labradors (as well as other breeds)There are several DNA tests that can be done for the Labrador Retriever.
PRA testing -Progressive Rod Cone Degeneration /Progressive Renal AtrophyThe most current one of interest would be the PRCD/ PRA genetic test. There is a link at the top of this page to understand more about PRA.
DNA Profiling -This is to profile your pedigree'd labrador.A certified sample is taken by a vet or collection officer, veryifying the the dog via microchip, pedigree name and number. A sample is taken. This is then tested to show that dogs unique markers. This is very similar to the human DNA testing for parentage. This is not something breeders are required to do but it is a test that eventually may be required. Alot of breeders are slowly DNA profiling their dogs at the same time as PRA testing. A watermarked certificate is issued with the individual dogs unique test markers and can be ANKC endorsed YES or NO depending on whether the collection is verified by an officer or vet at the time of collection.
Coat Colour Inheritance-
This test is done by designated collection agents (usually vets or registered breeders), by a cheek swab or if sending overseas by blood sample. Australia now has the facilities here to do these tests through Genetic Technologies Australia -
